Tomorrow is the last day of July and then ... my favorite month of the year! I am, in general, not a fan of summer. I don't like the heat, humidity, or bugs. But I love the relaxed, easy feel of this season. August marks my 50th summer on Earth. 😳 And while I am really getting excited for fall 🍁🍂🧡, I'm determined to squeeze all the joy I can out of what's left of this half-century summer. 🥰😎 #summer2021 #summer1971 #summertime #summervibes #summer #chalkboard #summerfun

My #containergarden harvest from yesterday. 😋 The watermelon was not quite ready, but thanks to the 🦝 getting into them overnight, this one was lying on the ground and I couldn't bear to waste it. I lost 3, but thankfully there are several more on the vines and my guys finally put up a protective fence. 🙌 Even slightly underripe, this Blacktail Mountain variety was pretty sweet. All the greens on the right are New Zealand Spinach. It is growing so well for me, even through the 100°+ temps and 20+ mph wind. It's a bit milder than actual spinach and my people seem to be enjoying it. It finally cooled down enough for my tomatoes to start turning - they've been on the vines and green for 3 weeks! So far, I'm pleased with most everything except my pole beans - the darn deer kept biting them off and I need to replant - again. 🙄 But the cukes, squash, tomatoes, greens, and melons seem to be thriving. I have 8 😳 eggplants on my 4 little plants and I'm excited to harvest them soon. Are you growing a garden this summer where you live? My second year to garden strictly in containers, and I am loving it even more than last year! 😍 This time, we invested in some shelving and grow lights so we could start our own seeds. 🌱 That was so much fun! We've had a cool, wet spring and it's really given my plants a great start. This container is growing some yummy bush cucumbers and we have a baby cuke! 😋 I love using natural elements like these large twigs as trellises for my climbers - it's inexpensive, and adds to the beauty of the garden as a whole. I've been feeling really anxious lately, but spending time working in my garden always soothes my nerves. It truly is one of my favorite places to be. Well, we thought spring was here, but because southern Kansas weather is 😜🤪 ... We're in a 🥶🥶 warning for the next several days with a prediction of ❄️! Of course we planted our tomato and pepper seedlings earlier this week so now we have to cover them at night so they don't croak. But it's fine. We're fine. Soon enough we'll be enjoying warmer temperatures and more gardening fun. And as a bonus ... Now, it's spring! 💐 I look forward to the lilacs blooming every year. Sometimes we get a late freeze and no lilacs. 😭 But this year my bushes are loaded with beautiful blooms. 🥰 They smell soooo good! These are old-fashioned lilacs planted by my grandma over 60 years ago and I love, love, love them. 💜💜💜 Fun fact: At our wedding (24 years ago next month! 😍) there were lilac scented candles burning in the sanctuary. One in each of the window ledges on both sides ... they made a beautiful glow and smelled amazing. Sourdough English muffins for yummy egg and sausage sandwiches. 😋 I grew up eating my grandma's sourdough bread and am so happy to be able to continue her loving tradition by making healthy homemade sourdough goodies for my family. Tomorrow is Valentine's Day. We're in a deep freeze 🥶🥶 here right now, with snow expected. Needless to say we won't be going anywhere except out to feed cattle multiple times tomorrow! 🐄🐄 But we don't need to because home truly is where our hearts are. ❤️❤️ As a Wife & Mama, I have always thought my job is to make home a haven, a comfortable, warm, welcoming place for my loved ones. I work so hard at that, and my happy reward is that we genuinely enjoy being at home together! Our space is small, and we're not immune to a little griping now and then.
